As the text suggests, your “real self” is what you are – your attributes, your characteristics, and your personality. Your “ideal self” is what you feel you should be; much of it due to societal and environmental influences. From a societal standpoint, many of us are driven by competition, achievement, and status; hence, the creation and portrayal of our ideal selves.
Think about how you communicate your “self” on social media (*if you do not engage in social media, then describe how it may affect other people/society and your “communities” – from Journal 1).
Are there disconnects between your social media self and your real self? What are the differences? How do the differences between your “real” and projected self-image impact your communication interactions both on-line and face-to face?
How is your sense of self impacted by the comments from social media?
How do you think your social media posts and communications impact others in your communities who are reading your social media?
What types of emotions and their reflected appraisals might others be experiencing as they see and read your posts?
Are their certain communities that you identified in the first journal that may be impacted differently by your social media presence? How might these communities be impacted differently?
From this analysis is there something you would like to change about how you interact with social media? If yes, what changes would you like to make?
