As Roe vs. Wade, the US Supreme Court’s decision from 1973 that protected women’s right to choose, has now, based on a recent ruling of the Supreme Court, been overturned, the contentious issue of abortion is yet again at the forefront of cultural and political battles. In a democracy, moral views of individuals determine their votes and their elected representatives determine the laws, but in an ideologically divided country such as ours, unfortunately, the disagreement among citizens regarding their moral views turns into ugly political battles where the issues are not anymore decided based on rational arguments. What is at stake here are destinies of millions of women whose lives will be determined once the red states implement ban on abortion all based on the belief that sacrificing women’s freedom is worth it because millions of potential children’s lives will be saved. In a country that prides itself with protecting freedom of speech, one of the person’s basic freedoms: freedom to decide about our body is now in a jeopardy of being taken away.
The question here is how do we balance moral views with legal restrictions: is it OK that the Supreme Court, which now, due to political strategies has a conservative majority, determines the fate of women regardless of their moral and religious views? How to ensure that differences between moral views in a democracy do not translate into imposing one set of moral principles on everyone?
