As I said in class, if you have a 95% or better in the class, you do not have to write the final paper. For those of you that are writing the final paper, I have reduced the length of the paper to 2-3 pages (write INTO the 3rd page at least and no more than a couple lines into the 4th page). Also, there is an option to write on Leaf by Niggle. The prompts will go live Friday. The paper is due next Friday by 11:59 PM. I will enforce a strict 10% reduction per day and will not accept papers after the last day of finals which is May 11 at 5:00 PM. The course will be inaccessible to you after that time.
Three options for writing.
I. Duns Scotus pages 150-155: Answer these questions.
How does the will control, or direct, thought?
Can the will be coerced? Explain.
In #5 Scotus discusses the affectio justitiae (affection for justice) and affectio commodi (affection for the advantageous). Explain these two affections of the will.
Why is the affection for justice nobler than the affection for the advantageous?
Scotus agrees that natural will and natural volition are not truly will and volition in the proper sense of the words. Why?
He says there are three ways that you can take the term “natural will” in a relative sense. Explain two of those ways.

II. Duns Scotus pages 167-182. Answer these questions.
How is beauty explained and how does that relate to explaining the nature of a good act?
Explain the three kinds of moral goodness.
Explain the threefold moral badness.
Does the end justify the means? Explain.
What is Scotus’ position?

III. Leaf by Niggle
Write about Niggle’s moral life. What is he like before the Journey? What happens to him at the Workhouse? What are the key features of his conversion experience? Link this story and the moral aspects to the texts we discussed this semester.

The paper addresses the question clearly and succinctly. The student demonstrates a basic understanding of the material.
