As a way to begin thinking about our first project, analyzing the online presence of a particular community, please address the following in a response (if easier, you can type this up in a Google Doc and share the link in a response) :
Make a short list of the communities (organizations, groups, cities, businesses, enterprises–not individuals) that you follow. You can include your community of study as well (this will help you start your Digital Media Analysis).
Beside each community, list the platforms you use to follow that community (Twitter, FB, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.)
If you don’t follow the community on all the platforms where they post, why not? Is this based on your own preference of different platforms? Or were you not aware of their presence on other platforms? Is it just the same content shared across platforms?
Take 15 minutes and look through posts of one of those communities on at least 2 the platforms (for today we are defining platform as a venue such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) where they post then answer the following questions.
How is the information different across platforms?
What affordances and modes (e.g., video with images and sound) does each platform use to share information–does it vary across platforms?
Which do you tend to look at on mobile devices? laptop? Why?
What seems to be the goal of the posts–does the goal vary across platforms?
Which platforms meet that goal the best?
Which platforms of this community are the most engaging?
Have you ever shared/retweeted/commented on any of this community’s platforms? Which ones and why?
In general, what encourages you to interact with a community’s online presence (what encourages you to share/retweet/comment on a post)?
What type of posts do the algorithms tend to favor in each platform and why do you think so?
Based on your brief analysis for this discussion activity, what seemed curious or unexpected or worth investigating further?
