When I came back to Korea after completing my high school and university degree in Canada, I have started to work in the field of Human Resources for almost six years until now at several multinational organizations, but not limited to the same industry.
It has been quite a journey, experiencing different aspects of industries, such as manufacturing, research, shipbuilding, and government organization. As an HR officer, the job responsibilities mostly remained the same and found myself the most intrigued and interested to research for local labor law. When applying its revision on the organization’s terms and conditions for employees, I have been genuinely focused and felt as a rewarding experience to provide necessary information and operating regulations applicable to everyone at a company.
However, I often found myself limited in understanding detailed interpretation of laws and also felt restricted in many of the works I do, which led to seek for legal advice to law firms and how some rules are prioritized above other laws. Then as I learned about the Juris Doctor program at the HILS that would develop potential lawyers in the basis of the U.S. law, I could picture myself as someone who could passionately practice and provide professional legal advice on employment and labor issues with my previous work experiences in HR. Also I believe that it would lead to another in-depth field of work that would possibly be aligned with my interpersonal skills. Since practicing law would inevitably include interaction with clients and people in general, I consider my personal characteristics of logical thinking and capability to maintain good relationships would be valuable to pursue a career in law.
As much as the HILS Juris Doctor program is outstanding and well-structured, I also expect it to be challenging in ways that I have never felt before. However, if it is God’s will as I have come to know about the program and opportunity, I pray and hope that I would become a Christian lawyer with international point of view that could provide professional legal advice to where I could serve in future. I believe my sincere commitment and eagerness to learn and explore U.S. laws would enable me to successfully fulfil the requirements of potential work that I would pursue.
