This unit explores cultural difference whilst affirming the unity of humankind. In this course you will gain an appreciation of cultural lifeworlds different from your own. The course commences by introducing the core concepts and four subfields of anthropology and the perspectives used in its study. The core of the unit involves a short overview of human evolution from the earliest hominid findings to the evolution of Homo sapiens sapiens. In this section the genesis of language is also considered as are the first migrations of modern humans and the ‘Out of Africa” hypothesis is explored. This is followed by a detailed examination of the settlement of New Guinea, once part of the ancient continent of Sahul. New Guinea is an island of great linguistic and cultural diversity and therefore provides exemplary material for studying difference in diverse worlds. Traditional customs and lifestyle will be evaluated before turning our attention to the inexorable march of modernity and its effect on the lives of the Papuans.

Aims
1. An introduction to social anthropology, its history, methodology and scope.
2. To acquire a basic understanding of what is meant by culture and an understanding and appreciation of its diversity.
3. To evaluate the ways in which traditional beliefs and practices have been affected by modernizing, globalizing forces.
4. The course will introduce students to the method of comparison and its theories.

Outcomes
1. To create a basic understanding of the aims and scope of anthropology.
2. For students to have an understanding of its methodology i.e. fieldwork and the theoretical models used for interpreting fieldwork.
3. For students to be able to utilize theoretical models to evaluate material but also to question the validity and limitation of these models.
4. For students to understand the holistic nature of social and cultural life
5. For students to appreciate the nature of social/cultural diversity but also the commonalities present in human cultures
6. For students to gain an insight into the diverse cultural lifeworlds of Papua New Guinea
7. To develop analytical skills in reading and writing
8. To develop verbal skills in debate and dialogue
