In the form of two comparative, analytical essays of approximately two and a half to five pages each (total: 5-10 pages together), respond to two of the five thematic prompts below using the ideas of the authors/directors we have read since the midterm to support your responses. Your essays must have distinct topics. Since you can use your texts, I expect you to quote the authors when possible. You must discuss at least four different texts/films in your analysis (at least two different texts/films per essay—only one film per essay). You are welcome to compare more than two works and/or characters if you want. (30 pts each essay). Essay structure: In the first paragraph, introduce your subject / topic and the main points you wish to discuss in your essay (thesis statement). Then devote one paragraph per point you wish to discuss in order to make each paragraph coherent. A simple conclusion is appropriate. In order to receive full credit, you must make a compelling case by drawing on specific knowledge from each text; this includes paraphrasing, direct quotes, pointing out particular narrative complexities, or demonstrating tensions in the character or textual development. Vague or general remarks about each novel will receive partial credit at best. Be sure to diversify your arguments and examples in each essay so you do not repeat ideas already used. Please see Rubric for Take-home Exam for assessment specifics. Be sure to copy the prompts you will address at the beginning of your essay. Essay Titles are always a good thing. Nota Bene: This assignment will use Turnitin. Do not plagiarize.
