An essay on All But My Life by Gerda Weissmann Klein and The Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass. The essay prompt is choose ONE difference between the two texts’ rhetorical situations and write an essay analyzing how this difference leads to a difference in the two authors’ prose style. Your first body paragraph should explore the many ways in which these two political memoirs are similar. This is essentially a concession paragraph, in which you set up the contrast you’re about to draw between the two texts. That contrast will have much more weight and power if you’ve shown their similarities. Then spend the rest of your essay (probably two more body paragraphs) focusing on the ONE difference in the texts’ rhetorical situations and the effects that difference has on the two memoirs. Use two or three significant examples per memoir to drive your point home. To be clear: This is NOT a research essay in which you investigate American slavery and/or the Holocaust. This is NOT a comparison of how much Douglass and Weissman suffered, or which of these social evils was worse. What you’re analyzing here is how the rhetorical situation affects the ways in which the text is written and presented
