Assignment Task :
TASK 1:
Transcribe the interviews to produce a “radio script”. Then produce a second script using Silverman’s conventions of conversation analysis (Silverman. “Analysing conversation” in Seale (ed.) 1998:263–to show such features as pauses and turn-taking. Identify and analyse conversation strategies (including avoidance) the learner uses. Aim to produce an annotated transcript which you can refer to in an explanation, so number each line of discourse and leave space between lines so you can include phonological transcriptions.
TASK 2:
Transcribe sections of the interviews to show key features of the learners’ pronunciation. Analyse the conversations phonologically, using both broad (phonemic) and narrow (phonetic) transcriptions. Use broad analysis for stretches of speech and narrow analysis for individual sounds or features of pronunciation. For example many learners from South-East Asian backgrounds often do not pronounce final consonants; you can show this phonemically. But they may also have a very nasalised delivery; you will need to use a phonetic transcription. Do not phonologically transcribe the whole interviews but rather use transcriptions to highlight particular stretches of language that contain the pronunciation features you wish to highlight.
TASK 3:
Also analyse prosodic features (word and sentence stress, contrastive stress, linking, intonation, pitch range etc.). Try to assess the overall effect of the features on comprehensibility.5.Evaluate why the learners’ pronunciation is like it is. The standard work to refer to is: Swan, M. & Smith, B (eds) (2001) Learner English: a teacher’s guide to interference and other problems(2nded) Cambridge University Press However, look for and use other references as well. For differences in dialects of languages you may need to go beyond Swan & Smith’s general descriptions. Look for patterns in the features you analyse and go beyond just saying “the sound is not in the learner’s L1”. Look for the environments and combinations in which problem sounds occur
TASK 4:
Select at least here pronunciation issues for each interviewee and suggest appropriate techniques/activities/materials to help them improve. Choose different issues to such as individual sounds, sounds in combination, rhythm and stress. There report should include the following:
a .Learner’s first language background and experience of learning English
b .Analysis of the learners’ conversation skills and strategies
c. Analysis of the learners’ pronunciation(phonemic and phonetic analysis)
d. Rationale/evaluation of first language influence
e. Techniques/activities/materials for selected pronunciation issues
f. Appendices: Transcriptions of interviews (annotated)g.Reference
