The Great Sphinx, witch is located in Giza, the third largest city in Egypt. Is a huge statute, with the body of a lion and the head of a king, built over 4500 years ago. The Great Sphinx was buried for most of it existence, until King Thutmose IV, while still a prince, had gone hunting and fell asleep in the shade of the sphinx head. During a dream, the sphinx spoke to Thutmose and told him to clear away the sand because it was choking the sphinx.

The sphinx told him that if he did this, he would be rewarded him with kingship.
Thutmose carried out this request and the sphinx held up his end of the deal. The Sphinx is built of soft sandstone and would have disappeared long ago had it not been buried for so long. The body is 200 feet in length and 65 feet tall. The face of the sphinx is 13 feet wide and its eyes are 6 feet high.

Part of the uraeus, the nose and the ritual beard are now missing. The beard from the sphinx is displayed in the British Museum. But no one knows what happened to the nose.
The statue is crumbling away because of the wind, humidity and smog. All attempts to restore it have often caused more harm than good. In the 1980’s, a restoration of The Great Sphinx was in progress. Over the next 6 years, more than 2,000 limestone blocks were added to the body of the sphinx and chemicals were injected.

This treatment did not work; it just flaked away along with parts of the original rock. In 1988 the left shoulder crumbled and blocks fell off. Right now they are concentrating on draining away subsoil seepage, which is damaging the rock. They are also repairing the damaged shoulder with smaller blocks.
In the late 1940s Edgar Cayce, in a trance he predicted that a chamber would be found under the front paws of the Sphinx which would contain a library of records originating with the survivors of the destruction of Atlantis. Workers restoring the Sphinx located a doorway in its side. And old photographs show that this door was open at one time.
In 1995 workers renovating a parking lot near the Sphinx uncovered a series of tunnels and pathways, two of which dip further underground near the Sphinx. Some believe these are ancient and probably contemporaneous with the Sphinx itself. While examining the erosion, a team using a seismograph around the Sphinx, found hollow, regularly shaped spaces or chambers a few meters below ground between the paws and to either side of the Sphinx. But no one has yet to dig them out.
