Authors Matheson, Pacione, Shultz, and Klugl state, “Behavioral change is more likely if the designer meets the patient where they are and builds a solution that works within their constraints”. The authors also share examples of how constraints were effectively addressed. One example from the article:
…Doug Dietz, a principle designer at General Electric (GE), who revolutionized the MRI experience for children after observing their fear and reluctance undergoing the procedure for which 80% required conscious sedation. He inspired his team at GE to design a more positive experience where the child becomes part of an interactive story that includes the MRI machine (now painted to be part of that story—an undersea adventure, a trip to space, a pirate encounter). Early trials show this new experience dropped the sedation rates dramatically and patient satisfaction scores increased by 90%.
Notice how Dietz addressed the constraint of fear and reluctance, by reimagining the experience for patients. ASSIGNMENT:

• List and describe two constraints experienced by that population in regard to the selected health goal.
• Suggest a creative recommendation to address. The recommendation should not be a widely known standard of care. You may, however, build on a standard approach to make it creative and aligned with the constraint.
Guiding thoughts: Constraints include all types of barriers, like fear and reluctance, ease and difficulty of completing the desired outcome, access, and/or availability. Some research may have to be done to do this well. As you think of ways to address constraints, be imaginative and creative. Thinking back to the NYT article, their creative solution was the wearing of a bright orange vest. Within the context of that work environment, that was imaginative.
