A few years ago, there was a huge debate in the theatre sparked on by a Tony-winning actress leaving the Classic Stage Company’s production of Bertholt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children. She made several claims about her voice not being heard, artistic differences with the director, etc. Tonya Pinkins, the actor, initially published an account for her leaving the production. Then the director of the production issued a response to Pickens’ article. Finally, a third response was released by an actor in the same production. You can read each of these statements in the course contents under “Discussion 3 Articles”.
After reading these articles, what are your thoughts? Where do you stand? How far should an actor go to stand up for what he or she feels is appropriate? Where does the actor’s job stop and the director’s job begin? Should the actor ever be allowed to circumvent or undermine a director’s vision?
