Integrity Report
Our first paper is a reflective personal essay combined with the opportunity to establish some foundational skills of academic writing (MLA format, structure, word choice, & audience considerations). It’s loosely based on the Integrity Report created by James Clear, a personal growth blogger. (Links to some examples are included later in these instructions.)
The thinking & reflection for this paper will, I hope, create a moment for you to pause & deeply consider your core values and how they’re playing out in your life. The paper will focus around these 3 questions:
What are the core values that drive my life and work?
How am I living and working with integrity right now?
How can I set a higher standard in the future?
I love that this paper will give you choice in content–there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ content because it’s based on your own core values. I love, as your teacher, that I’m layering onto this some expectations for the skills shown as you do that, so that this paper becomes a demonstration of these initial skills you’ve learned and the active choices you’re making in using them.
Here are my expectations for the skills to be shown….within that, you are released to make intentional choices as the active learner. Have fun. Email me, as always, w/ any ?s you have.
Paper Expectations
Intentional stylistic choices…organization, sentence structure & length, word choice & conciseness, tone, etc.
Examples / evidence where appropriate
MLA format is used for the paper setup: header, pagination, initial page setup, spacing. (Within that, feel free to use headers, bullets, etc., as you see fit, like you see in the examples.) This paper will not have a Works Cited page or citations unless you choose to quote something within it; then you’ll need to add those. (We’ll build those skills in the next paper.)
Minimum pages: 3 – 4
Getting Started
This list of core values (Links to an external site.) from James Clear’s website is a great starting point. A good range for your paper is 3-5 values, and you need to narrow your choices here, first, because the rest of the paper is anchored to what you choose.
Look through his example as you continue to form a picture of this assignment in your mind, knowing that this was written for his personal purpose and not for a college class, but you can get an idea of the content….James Clear’s 2016 Integrity Report (Links to an external site.)
Read through a couple of student examples shared with permission from last year, when I first introduced this paper. (Remember–your essay does NOT need research. You’ll see that these contain research & a Works Cited because I placed this at the END of class then, as a final demonstration of skills learned, and I wanted students to show those skills. I’ve chosen to instead shift it to the first paper of class this term.)

The essay will be scored at 100 points, using the guide below. It’s the same scoring guide for every paper this term, with one exception: Research is not one of the criteria for this first one.
