Social Construction Personal Narrative
2- 2/1/2 full pages– 500- 600 words FIRM! DO NOT OVER-WRITE!
typed, double-spaced, 12 pt font
We all have stories to tell. However, we do not necessarily know what they are and why they are important until we write them
Write a short, two page (500 word) essay that explores how a gender role or an idea you hold about being male or female has affected your identity in some way:
What is the role? How does it appear in your own life?
How have you learned that there are “expected” ways to behave based on gender?
In this piece you will write a story of how you learned a role, how it was taught to you, how it was created in you, how it is perpetuated by you, or has been broken down because of something you did, said or thought. You MUST use specific detail to SHOW the reader the event. Think of where you were, who you were with, what you said, what others said, what colors did you see, what sounds did you hear? Name names, give us a look at the experience. Make it sing!
You will be reading yourself, or someone you know as “text.” Your narrative will explore how you see or have seen yourself or someone you know “doing gender.” (fulfilling or disrupting a gender stereotype– See “The Social Construction of Gender” Judith Lorber) You may choose to write about a sibling, parent, mate, set of peers, friend, or teacher as the primary focus, but you must be lurking in the essay somewhere.
According to Judith Lorber, (The Social Construction of Gender) something about your identity as a woman or man has been socially constructed. What this means is that simply by being part of this (or any) culture you have learned that you are expected to behave a certain way, or do or be a certain thing because you are female or male.
