In their chapter, Cordes, Henig and Twombley (2000) briefly describe the three main environmental shifts that have shaped the work of nonprofits. By environment, they mean the cultural, political, regulatory and economic forces that comprise the external influences, which shape the behavior of nonprofit organizations. They argue that nonprofit organizations, in particular human services organizations, respond to these shifts in different ways. They can take an internal orientation and reform their own organizational structure, mission and strategic management in order to refocus their work to become more efficient, for example. They can also take an outward-orientation and try to adapt to and influence the economic and political factors that create the context and conditions in which they have to develop their work. For your post, answer questions 1 and 2.
1) In your post, briefly outline the three shifts the authors discuss and the norms and values associated with these periods. Do you think these shifts are associated with “market failure” or “government failure,” and why? (Hint: define “market failure” and “government failure”)
2) Cordes, Henig and Twombley (2000) discuss of privatization, which is the latest trend they discuss. Choose one (1) of the examples they examine: a) vouchers or b) charter schools. Try to answer the following three questions the authors’ pose at the beginning of the chapter analyzing either voucerhs or charter schools:
a) How does changing the broad institutional framework and changes in access to resources and funding change the behavior of nonprofit organizations? Are new incentives created that redirect the organizations’ behavior (think about political as well as economic strategies)? What are these incentives?
b) What changes in behavior might we see?
c) What are the implications of this behavior for the social mission nonprofits usually pursue?
d) What are the advantages / benefits as well as disadvantages / dangers of inserting mechanisms to privatize the provision of human services (e.g. vouchers or charter schools).
Make sure you write an introductory paragraph that has a thesis statement. What will you argue and what three points will you develop to support your argument? Underline your thesis. Introduce each main point again as a topic sentence for your body paragraphs and then develop that point using the PIE format (Point, Illustration – evidence from the reading -, and then Explanation of this evidence).
