No need for real data, you can just make it up
The purpose of the Personality Change Project is to provide you with experience in designing, delivering, and
evaluating a personality change intervention prepared according to the theories of motivation and emotion
discussed in class during the semester. You will need to determine the three TARGET behaviors for the
intervention and (only) ONE participant (yourself or another person identified ONLY by INITIALS! ). You will need to
develop a psychological intervention from a theoretical point of view to increase or decrease the
participant’s/your behaviors. In addition to implementing the intervention, you will need to collect
behavioral/self-report data to evaluate the intervention’s impact
I. Background Information: Identify the intervention participant (yourself or another person identified
ONLY by initials), your/his/her age, type, and extent of education, which (only) ONE of the four
possible personality factors (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Openness to
Experience) you will attempt to change (Please use The Change Goals Big-Five Inventory [Hudson &
Roberts, 2014] provided below). Please note that you should NOT change Neuroticism/Emotional
Stability. Please assess the personality of the participant (Please use The Big Five Inventory (BFI) scale
[ John & Srivastava, 1999] provided below).
II. Target Behavior: Define the three target BEHAVIORs (Please use Description of Change Goals
provided below), which you should change to help the participant/yourself reach his/your personality
change goal. Indicate your/the participant’s goal for the desired level of the target behavior. Is this
intervention designed to increase or decrease the behavior?
III. Intervention: Describe the behavior change intervention you have developed to change the three
target behaviors. These THREE behaviors that you want to change SHOULD BE MORE SPECIFIC THAN
THE ONES in the Description of Change Goals provided below. For example, instead of “I want to be
more sociable,” a specific behavior should be “I will say ‘hi’ to and spend some time with people
that I know when I see them today.” Which variables necessary for the motivation and emotion
theories discussed in the class did you include in the intervention? Why? Justify. Describe any changes
you had to make to the intervention during the implementation period.
IV. Data Collection Procedures: Describe in detail the procedures used to gather data on the three target
behaviors and other possible variables you may have used to change these behaviors. Report
your/the participant’s baseline level of the three target behaviors (collected typically over 1-3 days).
Report your/the participant’s level of the three target behavior after the intervention (collected
typically over 1-3 days). Report your/the participant’s PERSONALITY after the intervention (Please
use The Big Five Inventory (BFI) scale [ John & Srivastava, 1999] provided below).
V. Evaluation: At the end of the implementation period (typically 2 weeks), use a behavior
measures/self-reports to make a graph to evaluate the participant’s/your progress (collected
typically over 1-3 days). Did the participant’s/your behavior and or personality change as you
intended? Did the participant/you meet the behavior and/or personality change goal you set? What
recommendations would you make for the participant/yourself?
VI. Reflection: Reflect on your interventionist/program-developer performance in this project. What
were your areas of strength in working with the behavior/personality change problem? What areas
2
need further improvement? What would you do differently if you had an opportunity to do this
project again?
VII. Supporting Materials: Include your data collection forms and your behavioral/self-report/personality
data graph formed as described below.
VIII. References. Provide the references for the included variables and motivation and emotion theories
you used to prepare the intervention.
