Let’s use critical thinking skills to evaluate the debate about whether drug addiction is a disease. Some people argue it is an inherited disease (whether this be due to genetics, or the inheritance of behavioural patterns that promote addiction), whereas others argue it is a personal failure or moral weakness.
One of the critical skills we learned about in the Research Methods Lesson was to ensure we were using appropriate operational definitions. So, a good critical thinker will ask the question, “how are variables/issues/concepts being defined”, and “who is the source of those definitions”. So in this week’s discussion think about the definition of drug addiction, and who created that definition in order to present both sides of the debate. Questions to consider:
What’s the definition of drug addiction? Of Disease? And does drug addiction meet the criterion of a disease?
Who created those definitions (e.g., religious authorities? medical community? government?) and does anyone have a stake in maintaining those definitions?
Do those definitions generalize across contexts and behaviours? (e.g., if we define drug addiction as something you NEED, is it the same if we are addicted to alcohol as if we are addicted to exercise).
