2.1 Fracking
Now that you are an expert on fracking, how do you feel about this issue? Do you feel you would support a community to ban or approve gas production and fracking in your community? For your convenience here is a link to your group discussion board.
3.2 Mount Merapi
Having read through this case study, how do you think we deal with the issue of vulnerability with such a complexity of factors that lead to decision-making?
How do you convince someone to leave without their livelihood or livestock?
How do you convince someone to go against their cultural or religious beliefs?
How do you convince someone who does not understand the principles of volcanology?
4.1 Education
Now that you have completed this lesson, return your thoughts to the introduction and our discussion of knowledge and the tsunami hazard. Consider the circumstances of the Indonesia tsunami – for instance, it is a tourist region popular with many nationalities and consequently, languages and that it occurred during holiday season. How do you plan for situations like that, how do you make sure it does not happen again even if the next one is not for another 20 years. Come up with several ideas on how you would manage this situation and post them to your group. For your convenience here is a link to your group discussion board.
5.1 Landslide Vulnerability
Consider a scenario in which your current residence or a previous site (home, cottage, hotel on a trip, etc.) is at risk to some form of landslide. Hypothetically, after moving in you are made aware of the potential danger to your property due to land instability. This could be a severe event such as large landslide or avalanche or a smaller event where there is a sinkhole or ground deformation through creep. If you are struggling to think of a property you are familiar with, you can use your imagination and dream of a location you would like to visit (how most of 2020-2021 will be spent).
Using the list of indicators from the Samodra paper, cited above, choose two indicators that you feel are the most important for you to adopt to reduce your vulnerability. In your posting, provide a discussion on why you chose these two and describe how it will reduce or increase your level of exposure, coping capacity or resilience. You should provide some specifics about the indicator (rather than just stating money, provide some thought on the type of savings, income, investments, etc.).
6.1 Flooding
Would you choose to live in an area at or below water levels?
Should we continue to support those that choose to live in these areas through government relief, military action to reduce flood levels, and so on?
7.1 Leadership and ice storm
Having read these articles and others if you want to take it further, what are your thoughts on disasters and leadership. How should disasters be dealt with and what do you think of the Toronto situation during the winter of 2014 – maybe you lived through it, if so you can share your experiences as well
8.2 Vulnerability
Having worked through this material consider the following questions and comments:
Which groups were more vulnerable to Katrina and why?
What are some of the challenges in evacuating those most vulnerable from a large city?
Define physical vulnerability and social vulnerability. How do we deal with each? Which has the greatest challenges?
9.2 Prescribed Burns
After you have read through this material collect your thoughts and share your opinion on these questions.
Do you think prescribed burns are the best way to handle the fire hazard?
How do we deal with the problem that regardless of the situation human error can take place and sometimes it results in a disaster? Are there solutions to this?
10.3 Bird Flu
Post your answers to the following questions to your group bulletin board
What are the difficulties in developing and administering a vaccine?
What other methods can be employed to reduce the impact of the pandemic?
11.1 Socio-Technological Adjustments
Here we will investigate the topic of adjustments to technological hazards. Often it takes a disaster to initiate a change – sometimes things have been hazardously moving forward without adjustments to safety then a disaster strikes and we find a way to reduce the hazard. I want you to find an example of this – it does not have to be a disaster, it can be a single incident – and write a short report on what happened and what the adjustment was that followed. Or you can choose a hazard and make a suggestion that should be adopted before a disaster happens
12.3 Drought and Famine
From what we have discussed should drought be considered a natural hazard?
What would you recommend to reduce the threat of drought as a hazard?
