WEEK 7: CONTESTATION AND SOCIAL ACTION
When it comes to achieving environmental justice, change rarely comes easily. Saul Alinsky, an environmental activist who is credited with helping to clean up the infamous Chicago stockyards, is quoted in our textbook as stating “Change means movement. Movement means friction. Only in the frictionless vacuum of a nonexistent abstract world can movement or change occur without that abrasive friction of conflict” (p. 343). Another word to describe the “abrasive friction of conflict” is contestation.
Consider an example of a successful environmental movement. What obstacles did the movement encounter? How did the movement overcome resistance to achieve its goals?
In your follow-up responses, reply to and build on the ideas expressed by your fellow students.
