Does any one instrument seem to keep the rhythm for the whole group? Do you hear monophony, heterophony, or polyphony? Any call and response? Does one part sometimes seem to imitate another? Also, is there a conductor? If not, does one musician seem to take the lead in starting and ending pieces? Are the musicians playing from memory or reading from sheet music? Does there seem to be improvisation?

Also think about context and extra-musical issues. Who are the performers? Students, professionals, or a mixture? What kind of clothes do the performers wear? Is the audience largely composed of people who are students, or relatives of the performers, or people who appear to share similar cultural heritage with the music being performed? Or is there a culturally more diverse audience? How do they react to the music? Sing or tap along with it? Listen in a respectful silence and applaud at the end? What is the occasion of the performance? A formal concert? A demonstration in a museum? An informal outdoor concert? A street festival?
