Your gene family contains multiple copies in both bilaterians and cnidarians.You need to choose an article from the peer-reviewed, scientific literature to read about the relationships among members of your assigned gene family. You are going to write a short summary paper about the article you choose. Look at several papers. Choose one that you find interesting, and you think might be relevant for the overall term project.How to find possible papers:Your “starting gene” may be listed in GenBank with a descriptive gene name which you can use in a keyword search in Google Scholar to discover what gene family it belongs to.(scholar.google.com). Try adding the word “gene family” or “evolution” to your starting gene’s name to focus your search results on the relationship among gene family members.
It would be great to find a paper that talks about the evolution of your gene family in Cnidaria and Bilateria. However, any paper that talks about the relationships among members of the gene family (for example, among copies in humans) is okay.
A paper that talks about the relationships among members of a gene family will almost always have a phylogenetic tree. However, papers that focus primarily on different functions or structures among gene family members may not have a tree. That is also okay.
Requirement: this must be an article from the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Either a primary research article or a review paper will be fine. If you are in doubt, ask your TA.Your paper should summarize what you read, but should focus on:
–Review how you identified the article; i.e. why you suspect it is relevant for your gene family. mention how you went from your “starting gene” to identifying the gene family. –To the extent that your article contains the following information, you might discuss several of the following topics:Brief overview of the number and types of members of the gene family.
Brief overview of the putative function of the proteins in the gene family.
What is the organization of the family; Is the protein part of a larger superfamily? Are there subfamilies with different functions?
What is known about the evolution of the gene family in Cnidaria and Bilateria; or more generally what is described about the evolution of your gene family?
If there are many paralogs, is the expansion specific to Cnidaria, or is it shared with other metazoans?
Make sure to reference any citations (*including the article you studied) using (Author Year) inline citation and provide the complete reference in standard format (e.g.MLS).

At this site, the first sentence I read was: “This gene encodes a member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase (MAGUK) family of proteins,”
So, I went to google scholar (http://scholar.google.com) and search for: “maguk gene family evolution”, and this was the top hit: de Mendoza, Alex, Hiroshi Suga, and Iñaki Ruiz-Trillo. “Evolution of the MAGUK protein gene family in premetazoan lineages.” BMC evolutionary biology 10.1 (2010): 1-10.
I read through it carefully; it describes evolution of ZO in humans and Nematostella, as well as related proteins in the family from a variety of species. Looks really useful!
