Most of the oil that human activities add to the ocean each year does not come from oil spills. Instead, small amounts of oil are washed off the land (and often down storm drains and rivers) into the ocean when it rains. Thus, a little bit of oil enters the ocean everywhere along the coasts. If you add together all these tiny amounts of oil, the total amount of oil washed off the land is much larger than the amount of oil from oil spills.
QUESTION
Given this information about oil and what you read about ocean pollution in the reading assignment, which is worse for the environment, a big oil spill near the coast or ALL of the oil that leaks from our cars and gets washed into the ocean down storm drains each year? Why? Explain your reasoning.
NOTE: Just compare the damage caused by oil from these sources. Do NOT compare an oil spill with storm drain pollution in general. In other words, do not discuss or consider other things that come down storm drains like fecal matter, bacteria, plastic, and so on. When answering this question, just discuss oil pollution.
