) Discuss your response to the adaption, as well as the clips of other adaptations. What for you is the most important aspect of watching the film in conjunction with reading the novel?
Other possibilities: In the overview, I mentioned one significant change that the 2011 adaptation makes to the novel—the restructuring of the narrative as a kind of frame story, so that most of the story’s events now occur in flashback.
Roger Ebert discusses other aspects of the adaptation in his review. Discuss this change or Ebert’s observations, and/or give examples of other important aspects of the story that you felt were changed, emphasized, or rearranged by the film’s casting, narration, mood, camerawork, or something else.
2) How do you feel about these decisions? Overall do you see the film as a faithful adaptation or a transformation? What does the camera convey or emphasize that Bronte does not? Do you think Kurt Vonnegut’s graph of Jane Eyre’s plot applies to the novel or the movie? And what, in the end, can the adaptation help us to understand about the book that reading the book alone cannot?
