BOX 4.3 Case in Point As you read the following case, please consider the following issues: • What are the immediate and observable features of society and behaviour outlined in this case? • How can life course perspective be used to analyze this case? • What factors would you identify as trajectories in this case? Bruce McArthur, age 65, from Toronto, Ontario, was charged with murdering eight homosexual men from Toronto’s Gay Village between 2010 and 2017. McArthur pleaded guilty to eight counts of first-degree murder on 29 January 2019, and on 8 February 2019 was sentenced to 25 years in prison with no chance of parole until age 91. McArthur buried parts of his victims’ bodies in flower pots in Toronto while working for his landscape business. Toronto police found evidence that McArthur staged his victims for photographs and sexually assaulted the men before committing murder. On Halloween of 2001, McArthur assaulted a homosexual man with a metal pipe, causing head injury. McArthur was deemed low risk and placed under house arrest for a year, and on probation the following year. McArthur admits to repressing his sexual desires after this altercation, as he grew up in a very religious home as a child. McArthur’s parents were foster parents; including McArthur’s sister, there could be 10 children present in the home. McArthur had a strained relationship with his father, possibly due to his more feminine side being more dominant as a child. McArthur was also known to tattle on his classmates, possibly to seek parental attention he was not receiving at home. It is unlikely that McArthur suppressed his sexual desires and urge to kill until 2001 (Halloween altercation) or 2010 (first admitted murder). In the 1970s, there were numerous unsolved murders in Toronto’s Gay Village; there is speculation that this is when McArthur started his killing spree, as these murders are a mirror image of the more recent murders. Between 1975 and 1978, McArthur would have been 23–26 years old, a common age for serial killers to begin their criminal career. McArthur may have taken a break due to marriage and children; however, the breakdown of the marriage in 1999 may have started the cycle again. 1) Please provide a title page.
