For essay 3, you might choose to write about how Covid-19 exposed inequalities in:
Healthcare (based on race or economic level)
Jobs and unemployment
Economic inequality/income inequality
Food insecurity
Homelessness
Educational inequality: lack of internet access or computers for some students; students who could go back to school in person vs. those who could only attend school online through 2020-2021
Too much screen time – for children? for all of us?
Political and ideological divisions in our country
Losing loved ones and the toll it takes on people (this may relate to other topics such as mental health)
Lack of social connection and how that impacts growth, education, and mental health
Lack of respect for different choices (vaccines); inequality and discrimination against people who are unvaccinated; loss of opportunity
Can you think of other topics?
These are just a few topics; feel free to choose another, based on your interests. You could look at other issues in the context of Covid. For example, if you are interested in environmental topics, you might investigate how air pollution declined globally during the lockdowns and examine some societal changes that occurred during the pandemic that should be continued (or continued in a modified way) in order to help combat pollution or climate change.
Just make sure that you are narrowing down your topic to a scope that is right for a 5-7 page paper. If you choose a broad topic, you may find a way to narrow it down as you research it. Also, be sure to “test” out your topic by filling out the flowchart or responding to the questions under “Step 3” on the previous page. If you are having trouble answering any of the questions, the topic may not work (or you should contact me.)
Create a research question
When you choose a topic, you will then want to create a research question (or more than one). This question will guide you as you begin looking for information on your topic. Your research question(s) should be questions about what you want to find out about your topic. For example:
HOW did the Covid-19 pandemic reveal inequalities in the educational system that may have always been there?
HOW are people and organizations working to solve these problems?
