Write a 7-10 page essay (page count includes Works Cited) that either makes an original argument and relies on relevant and credible evidence to convince an audience that the argument is worth considering; OR an essay of the same length that provides information on a topic but does not necessarily take a side. Cite your sources in MLA style both within your essay and in a list of Works Cited at the end of your essay.
What’s an original argument? When you take stock of the conversation happening about a topic, you’ll begin to hear different voices in the conversation, and different positions in the debate. College research asks you to try to find a gap in the conversation (what key point is being overlooked?) or to find a way to extend the conversation or move it in a new direction. Your original argument is a claim YOU make based on YOUR understanding of the debate. In this project, you won’t simply be agreeing or disagreeing with someone else’s claim or position.
Use a minimum of five credible sources, at least one of which must be a scholarly (peer-reviewed) source. Keep in mind as you work that sources can be used for a variety of purposes: to define terms, explain background information, present expert testimony, provide a counterargument, or give statistics or other data.
