Learning Goal: I’m working on a writing report and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.1.Leadership is a term where a group member defines motivation. He/she takes a step forward to bring changes in the group for the betterment, success, and growth. Leadership is a challenge where what the leader wants is – accomplishment. Levi and Askay in their book Group Dynamics for Teams states, there is no exact answer to defining leadership in fact there could be different approaches. They consider situational leadership to be the best way of helping the leader to decide based on characteristics of team members. Experimenting is one of the leadership functions within the self-managing teams and requires skill to perform it. This helps team leaders in solving the problem in an effective manner. Leadership is not restricted to an individual however, it is a set of functions which can be performed by many of a team member. Furthermore, a leader in a team is assigned by an organization or team may elect their leader. This does not mean a team can have one final leader, it could be rotating from one to the other from time to time. A leader has the authority to make a team’s decision.2.Walker and Artiz in their book “Leadership Talk” defines leadership as performance beyond expectations. Like Levi and Askay, Walker and Artiz too believe leadership is the ability to influence team members to achieve goals and success. Having done so, one gets a better understanding of the difference between leadership and management. Authority related with management is referred to as “Position Power” however, leaders are either appointed or they emerge due to their unique approach or knowledge. Managers are capable of gaining the powers such as expert, referent and informational based on their role within the organization. Leaders on the other hand do not necessarily require the above-mentioned power to influence others. They use their relationships and expertise and that sums up to their communication techniques.
