Consider the following thought experiment:
One morning, you are driving to Professor Arca’s Ethics class. Unfortunately, your alarm didn’t ring to wake you up. You risk being late on an exam date. Since a lot is at stake, you are driving faster than usual. While driving, your smartphone skips your favorite Taylor Swift song (which is, easily, “Shake it Off”. You know you love it. It’s ok. I give you permission to admit it to yourself.). You momentarily look down to correct this, when all of a sudden, your car violently rams into something… squishy. You spin out of control, causing an accident involving several cars. Thankfully, you are not hurt. However, as you exit your vehicle, you realize that you hit and killed a small child, little Raulito, who was walking to school. As you assess the seriousness of the situation, a woman gets out of her car, crying hysterically. It becomes clear that she thinks she is the one who ran over Raulito. You know otherwise. The police are on their way. Raulito’s death all but guarantees jail time for the person found guilty of the accident.
Now, respond to the following prompts:
In between 1 – 3 paragraphs, give me a general descriiption of Kantian Deontology. Your descriiption should include:
An explanation of either the Principle of Universalizability or the Principle of Humanity (your choice).
An understanding of what, from the Kantian perspective, “the good will” entails and why it is morally important.
A brief descriiption of how either the Principle of Universalizability or the Principle of Humanity works in application (your choice).
Make sure you cite any quotations or paraphrases in the MLA Format. I’m expecting you to quote or paraphrase at least a couple times in these paragraphs.
Now that you’ve done that, give me 1 paragraph where you apply Kantian deontology to the above thought experiment.
In other words, from the perspective of either the Principle of Universalizability or the Principle of Humanity (your choice), is it morally right to allow the woman to believe that she struck and killed Raulito so that you avoid any legal consequences of your actions?
Lastly, consider some of the criticisms of the theory that you have encountered in our class—either from my lectures or from the class readings.
