2. Choose two approaches that seem to have a number of intersections. Discuss three ways that they work together, intersect, and/or agree.
Set B: (Choose 1 of the following to make a theoretical application to Life of Pi. Be sure to use plenty of references to the text utilizing close reading of a particular section of the novel.)
1. Martel makes constant use of religion in the novel. Considering that religion forms the mythological background to a particular culture, choose one example of his use of religion (as a mythological framework) in Life of Pi, and discuss how it might be used in either a feminist/gender studies, Marxist, Structuralist, or psychological approach.
2. While Life of Pi is not a novel about people living in a postcolonial setting necessarily, there are some interesting parallels to made between the relationships of power in the novel and postcolonial theory. Making use of either Pi’s life at home and/or the zoo while growing up or specific scenes in the lifeboat section of the novel, discuss ways that the ideas of two postcolonial theorist that we have covered (Spivak, Bhabha, Said, Fanon) can be applied to the novel.
