The following order contains essay questions for my university course midterm test. The course is called ENGB04: How to read a poem and is basically about analyzing different forms and variations of poetry. I will be attaching the course syllabus as well as includong the links to the shortpoems that need to be read in order to answer the questions properly.(Links are found at the end of the instructions) PLEASE DO NOT START THE WORK UNTIL YOU HAVE READ THE POEMS AND STUDIED THEM WELL. Part 2: Essay questions—write between 500-1000 words on each of the following prompts (worth 30 points each)
1. Describe in detail Elizabeth Bishop’s “Sestina.” Special focus should be paid to how diction (i.e. vocabulary) and form/structure establish the mood and suggest powerful emotions.
2. Pretend you are talking to a space alien who has just landed in the ravine on campus. This visitor, who for some reason knows English, has heard of what we Earthlings call “poetry” and is interested in it. Explain to this curious alien whatever the heck is going on in Wallace Stevens’s “Anecdote of the Jar.”
3. One of the advantages of poetry is that so much can be done with concision. Choose one of the short poems we read (this can include longer poems made up of short sections). Show how the poem you choose makes the most of its relative brevity.
