Next week on March 18, 2022 you have an important deadline: That’s the final day I will accept your midterm essays.
With this summary note I want to help you understand the simplest way to write your essay. Feel free to email me if you have questions.
First, and most important, you must read the article “In Defence of Luddism.”
You must read and understand Noble’s essay. The simplest way to do that is to read it a day or two before you start your own essay
Take notes that outline Noble’s essay for content, arguments, and what you think are the most important examples he offers in making his case.
You should have a clear idea of how and why he makes his defense of Luddism.
Please note that the author, David Noble, spells defense in the British style. You should use the US style and write the word with an S unless you are quoting Noble or writing the title of his essay.
Second, set up your draft with the formatting requirements before you start writing.
Write your name at the top of the paper. Write under your name “Midterm Essay”
Set format for double space; 12-point font; one-inch margins all around.
You must write no more than 2 pages, but more than 1 page. That should be easy if you follow the next step.
Third, divide your essay into three parts. The parts are stated in the assignment. Simply take those parts as your outline.
Part 1.
Why does Noble think we should defend historical Luddism?
Give a well-reasoned, respectful explanation—no opinion just yet.
This should make up about one third of your essay.
Part 2.
What examples can you provide from the readings for this class that allows you to show a luddite perspective?
Show me that you are informed about moments in media technology history and use that information to bolster your position.
Be very clear, concise, thoughtful, and thorough.
This should be one quarter (if shorter than 2 pages) to one third of your essay.
Part 3.
Conclude by identifying present-day issues in technology that we might not have covered yet in the course.
This can be anything that you think can be understood from the Luddite perspective.
You don’t have to be a Luddite yourself to do this. But if you were to think and write like Noble suggests, you should be able to think of good examples.
This should be one quarter (if shorter than 2 pages) to one third of your essay.
Fourth: When you are done with your final version, please review the grading criteria to see if you have done everything you can to get an A. Mistakes happen, but going over your work with the rubric for grading can help you edit, revise, and make corrections that will help you turn in your best work.
