James McCusick, in his article “Coleridge and the Economy of Nature,” writes that Wordsworth and Coleridge express a deep and abiding interest in the earth as the oikos, or the dwelling place, for all living things…” This idea that the earth is a dwelling place or home is one that pervades much ecocritical thought. Choose one or two poems that we have studied to this point and write about how these poems address this concept of earth as dwelling place/home/oikos. You do not have to choose a poem by Wordsworth or Coleridge.
I do not expect – or even really desire – that you consult any outside sources for this essay. But if you do, these must be fully cited with in-text citations and a work cited entry. For citaions of poems that you use as the main text in your response, the title of the poem and the line number(s) is sufficient for citation purposes.
The poems I would like you to use are “The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere” and “The Nightingale; A Conversational Poem” by Coleridge.
