The purpose of this exercise to hone your skills identifying, photographing and identifying different compositional and visual design elements. You should use a digital still camera, but a phone will be fine too. PART 1 – Lines (4 shots) Find and photograph things that demonstrate LINES in composition. That is, the viewer’s first thought must be “Oh look at that line!” (Which also means don’t stand twenty feet from a table and say the lines of the table count. They won’t, because the lines will only be about two percent of the pixels used in the image. Fill up your frame!). PART 2 – Basic Shapes (4 shots) Find and photograph BASIC SHAPES in composition. Include one shot for each – Circle, Square, Triangle, and Hexagon. Again, the shape must be the DOMINANT element in the shot. (Note: the hexagon is hardest to find, but they’re out there. In nature. In architecture. PART 3 – Z-Axis (2 shots) Compose and shoot 2 different photos that demonstrate FOREGROUND-MIDDLEGROUND-BACKGROUND compositions within the frame.
