Internship Placement Applications: Your personal statement is an essay given to a potential internship host along with your resume. A personal statement is your chance to tell the story of why you feel like you are a good fit for the internship. You can describe and give examples of the skills you possess and to give a potential internship host a better idea your goals and interests. As you are writing your statement, think of your audience – your potential employer abroad. The personal statement should be one page, single spaced. The Internship Personal Statement Guidelines include instructions about how to write and format your personal statement. *Optional – Do you have a working proficiency or fluency in a language other than English spoken in the country to which you’ve applied? If so, we recommend you submit your personal statement and resume in both English and your other known foreign language. Please include these in the same saved document. Remember that the personal statement you submit can always be revised. The internship coordinator will look at your personal statement and resume and offer suggestions on how to improve them if needed. Your personal statement does not have to be perfect – think of it as a starting point to get the internship that fits you. Personal Statement Guidelines Header for a personal statement should include the following: • Name • (Insert Country) Internship Personal Statement Please note that the following are suggestions, and this does not need to be a rigid structure. If you are writing your essay and you touch on these points in a different way, that works too. This should be written in a professional manner but still be in your voice. The first paragraph – The purpose of the personal statement • Background information about why you chose the internship and location • Brief summary of your experiences The second paragraph – Academic/career Interest and experiences • What academic experiences would help you in your internship? • What are your career goals? • How will the internship help with getting you to your goals? • Previous work, volunteer, or leadership experiences that will help you in your internship • What skills will you be bringing to the table • What skills are relevant in the career field you are interested in The third paragraph – Reason for the internship and location • What interested you about doing an internship in the location where you want to go? Are there any backup locations that you are open to as well? • What goals do you hope to meet from the internship you are considering? The fourth paragraph – Wrap up • Brief summary of everything you discussed in the personal statement • End with reaffirming the reasons why you want the internship
