PLEASE FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!!!…….. VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
Identify at least one current popular culture phenomenon and discuss its impact on society. How do you think it came to be, historically or theoretically? Identify who the intended audience is and discuss any possible issues. Are there issues with access across different groups of people? Does the phenomenon reinforce marginalization in any way and how does social construction of reality play a part? Discuss how the phenomenon is commodified and how the commodification contributes to the phenomenon’s popular success. Pull in at least two concepts/theories from chapters 1 through 4 from Szeman and O’Brien’s Popular Culture: A User’s Guide.
The phenomenon should be current and empirical in nature, meaning it should be something that we experience in current times across areas of our society. Some examples might be:
Public’s reception of the Marvel/DC films and shows.
Media coverage of global social movements or conflicts
Representation of different identities across film or television
Social responsibility and music
You can use any of these examples or you can discuss a phenomenon that you come up with on your own. It is key that you examine the phenomenon critically and discuss the questions/issues listed above.
For example, if you were to choose “Media coverage of global social movements or conflicts,” review how multiple sources cover similar stories. Discuss their angles and how their coverage might influence their audiences.
The paper should be 3 to 4 pages, double-spaced. 11-point Times New Roman Font. Citations should be in MLA format.
