These are the guidelines (which I am also uploading on a word document):
The assignment is for a four page paper that must be divided in two distinct parts. It must include a summary of the reading assignment and a thesis statement, and must develop an idea.
Your paper must briefly summarize a reading of your choice and explore your own thoughts and ideas in response to it. The essays must be written in 12-point font, using standard margins, and double- spaced. Each assignment must be a total of four pages.
Your assignment should be organized into two sections.
The first section needs to be labeled: Section 1: Summary. Please clearly label following these instructions. You should write a two summary of the reading selections, stating the title and author, the general topic, the main argument, and a brief descriiption of the body of the reading. This section will be graded on thoroughness and accuracy.
Your second section needs to be labeled: Section II: Discussion. This is part of the same assignment and should follow your summary in the same document. You are only uploading one file. In this section you should write a two-page discussion of an issue raised by the readings and your thoughts on it. This should focus on the reading itself, nothing outside. YOU MUST HAVE A THESIS STATEMENT, this means you must formulate an argument you are making that your discussion will be based on. Please have your thesis statement in bold or italics so I can clearly see it (if you do not have your thesis in bold or italic or underlined you will lose a point). This is an argument you are making about the reading or about the issue you chose to write about. It should not be a restatement of the author’s argument but your own argument about it. You will lose points if your statement doesn’t make a clear argument. Again, underline, italics, or bold your thesis statement. Please focus on the reading selection and issues discussed in class and do not use outside sources. If you use outside sources you will lose points.
The summary will be graded on accuracy and thoroughness. You must encapsulate the main ideas.
The discussion will be graded on thoroughly you explore your topic using the materials in the reading selection. Points will be deducted for a weak or vague thesis statement.
Everything must be written in your own words. You may use short quotes and must cite the page number. Do not use outside sources.
