The article you just read, “Racial Formation” by Howard Winant and Michael Omi, provides a good start to our practice of writing summaries: it’s not too long, yet it still has multiple points and subpoints. Remember, the key to good summary writing is figuring out what points are most important and which are not necessary for the summary (even if they’re useful information in the context of the larger article).
1. Let’s begin with the most crucial: In one sentence, in your own words, sum up the main point of the article. What is the authors’ primary argument? This is not what they do (talk about racial formation), but what they say or argue about the topic (Winant and Omi say X about racial formation).
2. Next, note any important sub-claims. Sub-claims are smaller arguments made in service of the main idea. Again, this not what they do (they also define race), but what they say (Winant and Omi say race can be defined as X).
3. What evidence do Winant and Omi provide for their main claim? Do they provide statistics? Quotations from studies? Real-life examples?
4. Sum up the evidence in 1-2 sentences.
5. What do the authors claim their evidence shows? What does it do for their argument?
