Learning Goal: I’m working on a english writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.TIPS FOR ESSAY I: Remember that a literary analysis (if that is the prompt you choose for Paper I) is NOT a summary of the text you choose to analyze, so don’t use entire paragraphs to summarize the scenes in the story and give a play-by-play – it is your analysis – your deeper understanding of what the story/author is saying with this piece. What is it trying to teach us? What does it teach us about “the Other” and who that is? How do these stories relate to today? Please remember to use the following guides regarding the formatting of your essays: Sample Works Cited and MLA In-text Citations – Paper I & II.docx & MLADirectQuotations.pdf & MLA-Integrating-Sources-Handout.pdf. I’ve noted it before, but as a reminder, this essay can be an expanded version of a reader response or discussion post response from the first half of the semester (for The Black Vampyre or Poe) if you choose to do the analysis prompt.***REMINDER – if choosing the textual analysis prompt- the essay should only focus on The Black Vampyre or Poe. You should not be writing about Radium Girls for Paper I, as stated in Paper I’s assignment box. Reader responses/Essays – Things to Remember: Book, film, and play titles always get italicized: The Black Vampyre: A Legend of St. Domingo, Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women, Radium City (doc), Eva (doc), Maus.
You should only be using short quotations for these assignments (four lines of quoted text or less), so the end punctuation for the quotation should only come AFTER the in-text citation, not before.
Remember that the “Introduction” at the beginning of The Black Vampyre has different authors than The Black Vampyre itself, so the in-text citations for information from the introduction should be (White, Faherty, and Jaudon #).
After the initial introduction of the author or scholar with their full name, refer to them only by their last name thereafter.
Research/article titles get quotation marks around them because they are one part of a larger text (often a book or journal): “Article Title”
Poe’s pieces get quotation marks around them because they are short stories on a website: “The Black Cat” or “The Telltale Heart”.
Omit the use of “In conclusion” from your rhetoric. If the conclusion wraps up the essay effectively, you do not need to signal to the reader that it is the end of the essay. That way the closing paragraph is written should do that without it.
Avoid using “you” in academic writing.
Avoid saying “I think” or “I believe” – you are writing the essay, so it is already known that this is what you think or believe .
Include pg numbers at the top right of the essay or response documents. This is part of MLA formatting. Your information (name, course code (EN 202 01), my name (Prof. Cavallo), and date essay is due) should appear on the top left of the draft – ONLY on the first page.
