Discuss the difference between instrumentalists and structuralists:
In Chapter 8, instrumentalists are defined as theorists who view criminal law and the criminal justice system solely as instruments for controlling the poor, have-not members of society. Structuralists, on the contrary, are defined as theorists who believe that the law is not the exclusive domain of the rich; rather, it is used to maintain the long-term interests of the capitalist system and to control members of any class who threaten its existence. Essentially, instrumentalists believe that the law and justice system directly serves the rich and powerful members of society only, and does not trust that it also serves in the best interest of the poor. Structuralists do not believe that the law and justice system necessarily protects any class, but rather believe that it’s only objective is to protect and serve the best interests of the capitalist system. Anyone, rich or poor, who were to threaten that would be at risk of being punished by law.

More often than not, this ideal vision often involves ideas of power and dominance, especially over women. This manifests itself into what is called “doing gender” where men feel to need to dominate women to feel manly enough. This correlates to domestic violence because it can lead to mean being verbally and physically degrading towards women, exploiting women, and overall abusing women to feel a sense of power.
