Automated Identification System: The database that is available for imaging, storage, and the rapid retrieval of fingerprints.Biometrics: The science of using biological properties to identify individuals; for example, fingerprints, retina scan, and voice recognition.Livescan Fingerprint: The fingerprint image obtained directly from the finger without inking the print and placing it on paper.Explore the Library. Using the available references, find a court case where automated fingerprint identification was used. You may use an Internet search but make sure that only a reliable source is used.Note: Make sure that your court case is AFIS related. Do not use statistical summaries or incident summaries. A court case is necessary. In a 1–2-page paper, write a summary of the article you have chosen and briefly explain the purposes and limitations of computerized fingerprint search systems.

Today, with millions of fingerprints on file, the old system is too time intensive and does not yield many fingerprint identifications. To solve this dilemma, automated systems have been developed that can store millions of fingerprint files. The systems can be used to scan an individual’s finger or palm prints into a computer as well as search unknown latent prints from crime scenes against a database of known criminal fingerprints.Dramatic enhancements can be performed on a latent print using computer and filter technology. In this unit, the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) will be examined, as well as Livescan Systems, and the newest technological developments. The strengths and limitations of these automated systems will also be addressed.
