For this assignment, you will assess the readability of the passage below, attempt to bring it to a 7th-grade reading level (or as low as you can – you will not be graded based on how low you can get it) while maintaining the general meaning of the passage, and then reflect on your process.
Passage:
During a public health emergency, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can use what is called an “Emergency Use Authorization” (EUA) to allow the use of medical products that are not yet approved to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or life-threatening diseases when certain criteria are met, including that there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives.
COVID-19 vaccines are currently being developed and tested for their safety and efficacy. It is likely that one or some of these vaccines will receive an EUA so that they can soon be used in the U.S. in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For a vaccine to receive an EUA, the FDA must determine if the vaccine’s benefits outweigh its risks based on data from rigorous clinical trial(s), which would show that a vaccine is safe and effective.
