Choose one of the primary sources listed above (the Testimony Gathered by Ashley’s Mines Commission, “Capital and Labour,” or Factory Rules in Berlin) and answer the topic question: Was Karl Marx’s call for revolution justified before 1850? Was it still justified by 1900?
The simplest structure is the five-paragraph essay (introduction, three paragraphs, and conclusion). Once you have chosen your document, read through it and take notes on any parts that might help you answer the research question. Once you have these notes, choose the three most illustrative or significant examples you’ve found, and write your analysis each of these three examples in the body of your essay. That is, give the example to your reader and explain to your reader what that example means to you, how you interpret it, and how it helps answer the topic question.
Once you’ve written the body of your essay (your three paragraphs that present and analyze evidence), write an introduction and conclusion that answer the larger question(s) about historical changes for workers. Your introduction should fully explain your thesis (i.e. your answer to the research question) and introduce your evidence (which document you’re using). Your introduction should also explain (very briefly) historical context: what workers’ lives were like before 1848, and how things had changed by the end of the 1800s. A successful historical introduction is, in fact, the whole essay presented in brief. Your thesis paragraph should fully answer both the topic questions in detail and outline the major points of your essay.
The conclusion should restate your argument and present your further thoughts. Given what had changed by 1900, do you think revolution still made sense for the workers or was it no longer necessary? That is, did workers still need a Marxist revolution to improve their lives? Why or why not? Use evidence to explain your view. Remember that your grade is not determined by what you argue but by how well you defend your view using historical facts.
Requirements & Format
You must use the required primary sources as evidence for your essay, cite them correctly in a standard format (MLA, APA, or Chicago), and include a bibliography or works cited page (remember to list your primary source and any other source of information you use, including the textbook, YouTube videos, etc.). Remember that you must provide a citation (not just a bibliographic entry on your work cited page, but a citation in the essay itself) every time you refer to an outside source of information in your paper, whether you are quoting, paraphrasing, or alluding to it.
Your paper must:
be between two and three pages (note that your title page and bibliography do not count as part of the page count)
be written in double-spaced 12-point Times or Times New Roman font
have one-inch margins on all four sides
have page numbers at the bottom of the page
include a title page with your name, the title of your paper, the course (HIST 121), and the date
