In the modern workplace and external environments, change is occurring rapidly, and this demands a high level of adaptability and flexibility for all involved stakeholders. One leadership theory that meets these demands is situational leadership, which emphasizes matching leadership setting/context to leadership style (Henkel & Bourdeau, 2018). This aspect entails understanding the different styles or approaches to leadership and establishing the appropriate one for a given context. Given its high relevance for the modern-day context, I have taken a keen interest in this leadership theory as I believe it can mold my professional life.
I find this leadership theory to be highly applicable to my future workplace, especially since I aspire to be a CEO one day in a company. This position requires a high degree of responsiveness to ever-changing situations as the individual is in charge of several organizational elements. This occurrence is why I feel that situational leadership offers critical lessons and knowledge that enable me to handle the different challenges associated with this position. Secondly, situational leadership can contribute positively to organizational behavior and workplace diversity. For instance, in the case of workplace diversity, different types of employees based on gender, culture, ethnicity, race, and age, amongst other criteria, will require different leadership styles to be effective (Thompson & Glasø, 2018). In being able to properly lead the different or diverse factions of the workforce, situational leadership then enhances organizational behavior.
In further exploring the situational leadership theory, I would like to explore the following research questions. Firstly, which tools do situational leaders use to establish or identify the appropriate leadership style for a given situation? Secondly, what are the key indicators that demonstrate a mismatch between the selected leadership style and its applicable context? These questions will positively contribute to my understanding and future use of this leadership theory.
