response to this statement:
There are several reasons why some people choose to not report crimes to the police. I’ve been in law enforcement now for 21 years now and I think I’ve seen just about every reason imaginable why people don’t report crimes to the police. The first one I can think of is they are “embarrassed” and they don’t want anyone to know what had happened to them. They feel that by reporting a particular crime to the police, other people will judge their actions and it could cause them undue emotional stress.
The 2nd biggest reason I have found is fear of retaliation. The old saying of “snitches get stitches” is still commonly used today and is being pushed by parents in our community to our children. No one wants to be the individual who reports a crime because they fear the suspect will find out they reported it and come after them.
Another reason I’ve run across is people believe there is nothing the police can do to help them. A random burglary of a house goes unreported because the victim doesn’t believe the police will ever catch the suspect and they will never get their property back anyway, so why go through the hassle of reporting it. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. We arrest people all of the time that have stolen property on them or in their house that we can’t seize because we can’t identify the rightful owners. There are times we seize stolen property but can’t find the rightful owner because they never reported it to the local police.
Lastly, there are some people that don’t like the police and don’t feel they nee to report it. it would depend on the severity of the case or how much they are at a loss that would determine whether or not they would eventually report it to the police.
The benefits of victims reporting crimes to the police is the police need to know what’s going on. If a burglar is targeting a specific area for burglaries and those crimes are going unreported, the police aren’t aware of what is taking place and they aren’t able to address it. If women are going for a jog in the morning and are being sexually assaulted and they are going unreported, the local police department wouldn’t be aware of a sexual predator that is on the loose. Police Department all over the United States use Crime Analysis technology that show influxes in crimes in certain areas. Law Enforcement agencies use this data to take a proactive approach in an effort to deter crime in these specific area. Undercover officers are utilized in these areas to blend in with the general public and to have a better understanding of the crime going on in these areas. However, if crimes aren’t being reported, law enforcement wouldn’t know where to start. I would always recommend if you are a victim of a crime, no matter how small the incident is, to report it to the police.
