1) Please begin by reading the following article: Tomlinson, C. A. (2000). What is Differentiated Instruction? (in files) Notice how there are four elements of emphasis that the teacher or teaching assistant can differentiate:
Content
Process
Product
Learning Environment
2) Consider the following scenario: You are working as an educational assistant in a Grade 4 classroom. The teacher is planning a lesson on food chains and food webs and you will be meeting with the teacher to talk about the upcoming class. In the class, there are three students who have significant challenges with focus and attention and you frequently provide support to these students within the classroom and have been asked by the teacher about your thoughts on how to further adapt this lesson to ensure all students can successfully engage in the lesson.
3) You will focus on identifying the differentiation that is already happening in the lesson and suggest further ways to differentiate the lesson with the students’ needs in mind.
4) Read through the teacher’s proposed lesson Food Chains and Webs lesson plan (in Files). It may also help to look up some additional lesson plans on the topic of food chains and webs to deepen your understanding of the topic if this lesson topic is unfamiliar to you.
In approximately 2-3 pages answer the following questions:
Provide a definition of differentiated learning (in your own words).
Identify specific lesson activities that you think might pose difficulty for students with attention challenges and explain why the activity might be challenging.
Identify the differentiation that is already present in the lesson plan and categorize the DI according to elements (content, process, product, or environment).
Describe further differentiation that could occur in this lesson to help ensure that students with attention challenges can be successful. Provide at least one suggestion for each element of differentiating (content, process, product, or environment).
You may use a chart format for c and d above if you find it easier to share your information in that format. Be sure to clearly label your columns if you chose a chart format.
5. Identify three specific strategies that would support the self-regulation of students with attention challenges that could be implemented in this lesson. When choosing your strategies select one strategy that targets the biological domain, another that targets the cognitive domain, and a third that targets the social domain and clearly links the strategy to the domain(s) that it supports.
