The study of children has evolved over time. In the 1700s, Rousseau proposed that children were born innately good and that growth and development follow the laws of nature. In the 1800s, Charles Darwin introduced the study of children. Now, there are many theories of child development. Theories are attempts to explain in an organized or systemic manner how young children develop and learn as well as what is important for them to learn. Different theories focus on unique aspects of development. Theories influence how parents and teachers interact with young children. We now know that young children learn prenatally, actively, and continuously. Healthy relationships support children’s learning and development (Wittmer et al., 2017, p. 21).
