For your short essay assignment, you are to apply one of these seven approaches to analyze how social stratification is produced in the context of a single film, play, or TV show. In addition to an introduction and conclusion that summarize your main argument, your essay should contain three parts. First, describe the sociological approach you are using and support your descriiption with references to in-class and outside sources (see citation requirements below). This descriiption should summarize the origins of this approach (who originated it, in what historical context did it emerge, what questions or debates were the originators of this approach trying to engage), explain its main argument(s), and define any relevant concepts. Second, identify the film, play, or TV show you will analyze and summarize main the main premise and/or plot. Third, use key concepts and ideas from the sociological approach you chose to make an argument about how social stratification is produced in the context of the film/play/show, as well as how this system of social stratification creates inequality between the characters.
Citation requirements: Your essay must cite all relevant class sources for the sociological approach you use. In addition, you must use and cite two outside, scholarly sources to support your summary of the approach’s origins, main arguments, and key concepts. You must also include a proper citation for the film/play/show you analyze, as well as for any additional sources you reference.
