Instructions: This Discussion attempts to explore how you perceive what you see as “Cool” – something that you really like. There are a variety of factors, and so many things that are “cool” in society today. We may not like the same things, but we all have our own interests and care about them the same way. I’m hoping to explore that process.
This short write attempts to explore how you perceive what you see as “Cool” – something that you really like. There are a variety of factors, and so many things that are “cool” in society today. We may not like the same things, but we all have our own interests and care about them the same way. I’m hoping to explore that process.
Please try to use Gladwell’s ideas in his article about the cool hunt in describing your own ideas about what is cool as best as you can. Bernays created these techniques around 100 years ago, and it’s interesting to see how things have adapted to our era.
NOTE: You can quote without needing to include a Works Cited portion of the response because I know what article you’re referencing.

Part 1
Respond to my prompt.
What object / thing do you think best represented you when you were younger? Choose a time when you were approx. 12 or 13 years old- I’m looking for a time right around the time you were first feeling a sense that you were no longer a child and were feeling a sense of wanting to be more independent or adult.
What was it about that object that you thought was “cool”? What do you think may have influenced you wanting it- a friend, an older relative, TV, etc. ? Use the ideas of Bernays and the marketing techniques to analyze how they may have influenced your thoughts about what is “cool”
Please choose a specific item rather than something like a sport or activity (such as Dancing or Soccer). For example, if you liked dancing then you would write about your favorite pair of dancing shoes and explore that for the prompt. You would not just talk about how much you liked dancing when you were younger. You can talk about that through your favorite pair of dancing shoes while explaining why the shoes were so important- what they were made of, how comfortable they were, what kind of dancing shoe was it (tap, ballet, etc.), and anything else that might be relevant.
A response of 2 full paragraphs for each bullet point will be required to meet my expectations. Don’t tell me what it is in one sentence and leave it at that. Explain yourself a little more in your response. Thanks
