Learning Goal: I’m working on a nursing discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.I need a response to the post below: America’s opioid overdose crisis is proving to be a dynamic and ever-changing phenomenon that experts say has played out in four waves (Siegel, 2020)Description of the IssueAccording to digital communication drug overdose has been a crisis in America, the number of drug overdose deaths decreased from 2017-2018 but it is believed to be 4x higher in 2018 than in 1999 with the majority of those deaths unintentional. These numbers are still on the rise, and this is breaking up the family unit and the nation as a whole. The majority of people hooked on drugs happened after being prescribed opioids as pain medication. Unfortunately, the misinformation and downplaying from pharmaceutical companies on the addictive potential from that class of medication is one of the reasons why we are struggling as a nation. There is a lot of work that needs to be done in all departments, especially with the pandemic still looming.Impact on Work SettingDevastating consequences of the opioid epidemic include increases in opioid misuse and related overdoses, as well as the rising incidence of newborns experiencing withdrawal syndrome due to opioid use and misuse during pregnancy.Working in a mental health behavioral setting I have seen how opioid addiction has affected the community. I often see the same patients come in and out of the facility which at times is disheartening especially after listening to how some of these patients ended up with the addiction. Health System ResponseTo fight the reverse opioid addiction and fight the overdose pandemic, prevention and access to treatment are critical to fighting this epidemic. Primary care settings have increasingly become a gateway to better care for individuals with both behavioral health (including substance use) and primary care needs.
