Read the two passages below on the subject of violence within the context of racial uprisings from Rodney King to Philado Castile to Geoge Floyd.  While MLK believes love is more powerful than violence, Abdul-Jabbar believes that violence (although unjustifiable) can shine a light on racism. Which position do you agree with and why? Write an essay to convince readers of your position, using evidence from both texts for support. You may also quote from the text Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. To make your essay convincing, be sure to include 1–2 body paragraphs and 2–3 pieces of evidence per body paragraph.

Martin Luther King Jr., 1968: “The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence, you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence, you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, May 2020 (Response to the George Floyd Protests): Yes, protests often are used as an excuse for some to take advantage, just as when fans celebrating a hometown sports team championship burn cars and destroy storefronts. I don’t want to see stores looted or even buildings burn. But African Americans have been living in a burning building for many years, choking on the smoke as the flames burn closer and closer. Racism in America is like dust in the air. It seems invisible — even if you’re choking on it — until you let the sun in. Then you see it’s everywhere. As long as we keep shining that light, we have a chance of cleaning it wherever it lands. But we have to stay vigilant because it’s always still in the air.
